#14Days … from a different angle

On Monday, October 6th CBSNews kicks off the #14 Days on the Wagon campaign to bring awareness to the struggles that accompany recovery from addiciton. The challenge to give up alcohol, drugs, etc. for 14 days is a chance to provide support and solidarity to those in recovery, and also to potential jumpstart the process for anyone who is in that place in their lives.

I know so many people who struggled with addiction, and who have faced it head on, with the help of friends, family, and groups like AA, NA, CODA. Recovery takes huge amounts of strength and perserverance whether you have been sober for 24 years or 24 hours. This challenge is also an opportunity to

I want to step up and support this campaign and honor my friends, and… I don’t drink, smoke, or do drugs.

The #14 Days challenge has brought up some interesting things for me to think about, and I want to share them with you because maybe they’ll get you thinking too.

A year or so ago I had the amazing good fortune to be gifted a spot in Mastin Kipp and Tommy Rosen‘s live Daily Love event when it came through Boulder, CO. During that event Tommy Rosen said a couple of things that really stuck with me. One of those things was… and I am totally paraphrasing here…

We are ALL in recovery from something.

For a good portion of people that might be drugs or alcohol. For some it might be something totally different. Maybe its something equally serious like abusive relationships, or it could be something that seems more innocuous like caffeine.

What about…

  • Complaining
  • Arguing
  • Self-deprecation

Or maybe it’s something more physical?

  • Adrenaline
  • Junk food
  • Sugar

Maybe you are addicted to drama and that addiction encourages you to stir the pot when things are “too quiet”.

There is a great scene in the movie He’s Just Not That Into You, where the guy (Justin Long) is telling the girl (Gennifer Goodwin) that she is in love with the drama in her life. She obviously resists and he counters with  “So you never wait until the last minute on a deadline or phone bill because secretly you kind of love the drama of not knowing whether or not you’re going to make it?”

Who do you know like that?

Is it you?

We all have something that we would be healthier and happier without. And this is a great opportunity to make a change for yourself while supporting others who are changing their lives for the better.

What in your life might you be (or need to be) in recovery from?

What one change can you make for the next 14 days?

How might your life change?

I’ll be taking the challenge on both a mind and body level. So for me the next #14Days will be free of worry (because when I worry I start to spiral into a bad place) and also free of soda (which is a habit I have fallen back into hard).

Are you willing to challenge yourself?

Can you give up that nightly glass of wine? That sweet treat? The urge to be judgemental or to complain?

Tell me about it in the comments or on Facebook.
